These Iced Orange Amish Sugar Cookies are bursting with citrus flavor and have a delightful soft texture. The tangy orange icing adds the perfect finishing touch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions:

Put the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl and mix them together until they are light and fluffy

Grate the orange zest and add it along with the orange juice and vanilla extract

Mix everything together well

Mix the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a different bowl

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing them in with buttermilk every so often

Start with the dry ingredients and end with the buttermilk

Don't mix any further than that

Do not mix too much

Take two equal pieces of dough and roll each one out into a flat disk

Cover each disk with plastic wrap and put them in the fridge for at least two hours or overnight

Warm your oven up to 350F 175C and put parchment paper on baking sheets

Spread the chilled dough out on a floured surface until it's about 1/4 inch thick

Using cookie cutters, cut out the shapes you want and put them on the baking sheets that have been prepared

For 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden, bake the cookies

When you take the cookies out of the oven, let them cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheets before moving them to wire racks to cool all the way

To make the icing, mix 2 cups of powdered sugar with 34 tablespoons of orange juice that has just been squeezed until light and fluffy

Cover the cookies with the icing, and wait for it to set before you serve them

Have fun with your tasty Orange Iced Amish Sugar Cookies!
